2095 series on the Mariazellerbahn

Beitrag von Rods of Revolution »

Hi, I’m English railway enthusiast. I was wondering if you could help me. I’m planning a trip to Austria on the 26th May – 30th May. I will be going to the Ybbstalbahn on the 27th for the 2091s 70 year anniversary, but for the rest of the time I’ll be on the Mariazellerbahn. I would like to know which trains will be hauled be the 2095 series locomotive?

Thank you very much, apologies for not having very good German.

hi!

If there are enough 1099 and 4090, only the following trains are hauled by 2095:

Monday to Friday:
Lp34381, Ogr 4:24- Man 4:55
6850, Man 6:26- Pb 7:24
6813, Pb 17:24- Lae 18:55
Lp34374, Lae 19:59- Ogr 21:01

Saturday:
6867, Ogr 5:39- Man 6:13
6850, Man 6:26- Pb 7:24

Sunday:
Lp34371, Apl 18:15- Ogr 18:28

An Lp is a complete passenger train without carrying passengers, can be interesting for watching and photographing.
Ogr: Ober Grafendorf
Man: Mank
Pb: St. Poelten Hauptbahnhof
Lae: Laubenbachmuehle
Apl: St. Poelten Alpenbahnhof
If there are not enough 1099 and 4090, some addintional trains Pb- Lae can be hauled by 2095.

greets, markus

Danke! I have seen your beautiful pictures on the line, do you know good photo locations that are easy to access by train?

Thank you!

It depends on what you mean by "easy to access"... If you want photo locations that are really very close to a station (10 min by foot) it's maybe best to try Annaberg or Wienerbruck-Josefsberg. There you can find some beautiful places which are quite easy to access. A little description coming from the north: About one km before Annaberg station there is the famous "Saugraben-Viadukt", it's the only building which has still a surface of natural stone. Then before Annaberg station the line comes down along the hill, nice pictures can also be taken there. Annaberg station itself is very beautiful. After Annaberg station there are lots of possibilities before and at the lake. Wienerbruck station is quite close by foot and is very beautiful. After the station there is a 180-degree- turnaround.

If you do not mind walking for 20min or more, you can find really nice places everywhere. Important for making good photos is a detailled map (you can have a look in the internet at www.austrianmap.at) and maybe also a good strategy when you want to be at which place, as there are not too many trains a day...

Be careful that lots of trains between Laubenbachmuehle and Mariazell only stop on demand!

If you have further questions, don't hesitate to ask...

Thank you very much! Is it possible to walk beside the tracks to get between stations?

I have noticed that on the Mariazellerbahn.at it says that the 4090s are out of service, does that mean more 2095s may be used on the trains to Laubenbachmuehle? Thank you for all the info you are providing, it is all very helpful!

The problem is: It's nearly impossible to keep this list up to date, availability of the clas 4090 railcars is changing from day to day. So in case of doubt it's useful to ask here in the forum.

Ok, thank you. If they happen(on the days I'm there) to be out of operation are 2095s used instead or are 5090s used in multiple? Thanks.

Well, during my last trips back in wintertime they prefered (and so I did!) replacement by 1099 and coaches (when available).

Hello Rods of revolution,

At first it should be mentioned that walking on a railroadtrack is an offence as is in the whole of Europe including in Britain I believe.
The danger of walking on or near the track is the same as everywhere else. There are parts along the Mariazell railway where there is just the free loading gauge and nothing more. When you are walking there and you are surprised by , for instance , a maintenance train , which isn't in the timetables , there often is no getaway space. I believe it doesn't need any further comment what could happen. Also think of the traindriver . To him it's like driving towards a railroadcrossing with traffic on it.
So if you really think you have to follow the track , please walk near the track if possible. Otherwise I wish you a pleasant stay in Austria.

Kind regards , Jelle

Thank you, I have walked around workshops and goods yards on previous visits to Austria. The station staff have told me just keep away from the main running lines. A friend of mine told me that parts of the Mariazellerbahn are public rights of way because the rail track is the only way to get to certain places, is this true?

I don't know better, I wanted to know about the mariazellerbahn. My friend said you were allowed to walk on the main track on the mariazellerbahn because it was the only way to get between certain places.

These certain places could indeed be of interest for some railway enthusiasts. But they are no places of public interest and so there's no public rigth of way on the tracks or any part of the trackbed like tunnels, bridges etc.

Walking on the tracks is definitely forbidden and it's a lot of risk. There may be some photographers doing differently - and a few I may have seen doing so - but whatever they are doing lies within their own responsibility.

In fact I know just one railway line (in Europe) where walking on the tracks is legally allowed (or at least was when I visited it 13 years ago). This is the Diakovto - Kalavrita rack railway in Greece. Part of a long-range hiking route runs over the trackbed through a gorge, even narrower and more dangerous than the Mariazellerbahn route. Well, I walked it after the last train in the late afternoon...

Maybe if you bring an inflatable boat! Last time I was there the track wasn't really visible because of the undergrowth alongside the line. This part of the track is especially dangerous to walk over because of the formentioned reasons. Maybe you can get access from the road above. I don't know if the woods are privately owned or open to the public. Maybe someone else in the forum can tell.

But it's no problem to take pictures of the horseshoe-curve at Wienerbruck station:

Danke, I will be taking a few pictures on that curve I think! What is access like to the Saugrabenviadukt? Is that difficult to get to by train?

Saugraben viaduct

Beitrag von Herbert Ortner »

Saugraben viaduct is easily accessable from Annaberg station, it's a short walk back in St. Pölten direction. Take a look at this picture of the station:

http://meine.bahnen.at/fotomzb/mz0129.jpg

The path in the foreground crosses the track at the wooden box (a lookout for hunters) and is leading to the viaduct along the left side of the track. What you will see at the end of the path is this, train is going to Mariazell:
